Understanding the role of organellar metabolism in health and disease
The Birsoy laboratory studies how cells sense, use, and adapt to nutrients, with a particular focus on the metabolic pathways that support cancer growth and normal physiology. We combine functional genomics, metabolomics, biochemical approaches, and organelle-specific profiling to uncover metabolic pathways that operate within cellular compartments. Our work has identified new nutrient transporters, metabolic dependencies, and mechanisms of redox regulation, and has revealed how oncogenic mutations and the surrounding tissue environment shape tumor formation and metastasis.
